Recommended Surfboards:
At Bolsa Chica, you'll find the waves are perfect for longboarding. In fact, beginners should learn on longboards, and we recommend a 9ft wide soft top for an optimal experience.

Ideal Conditions:
Waves are typically smaller and more gentle, providing an ideal environment for learners.
A gradual sandbar creates easier paddle outs and smoother waves to catch.
The break offers waves year-round, making it suitable for all seasons.

Crowds and Safety:
Bolsa Chica is known for its spaciousness, ensuring you won't have to contend for waves. Additionally, it's incredibly safe, with no risk of being thrown against rocks or pier pylons. However, the sandy bottom means there can be sting rays, so keep an eye out. Lifeguard towers stationed every hundred yards and a dedicated lifeguard headquarters add an extra layer of safety.

Enter the State Beach at the main entrance and either pay $15 for a day pass or use your California State Beach pass. There's plenty of parking right on the beach in the State Beach lots, ensuring convenient access. You won't have to worry about a crowded lot except for occasional weekends in the summer.

If you venture a few miles down the road to the Huntington Beach pier, you'll observe skilled surfers on shorter boards. That's because the pier's waves are better suited for them. At Bolsa Chica, you'll primarily notice longboards. It's a designated longboarding surf spot, making it perfect for beginners.
